Meet an Expert: Christopher Howey – Sales Director
Dyne Technology Ltd, the UK and Ireland’s leading supplier of Plasma Treating technology is excited to announce the appointment of Mr. Christopher Howey as Sales Director. Christopher first joined the Dyne Technology team in June 2011 to reinforce the company’s sales team, with a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Chemistry and a successful sales background in adhesives. Since joining the Dyne Technology team, Christopher has continued to develop his skills and has become one of the UK and Ireland’s leading experts on solving the problems of adhesion.
Industry expert Christopher Howey explains Plasma Treatment simply
Plasma Treating is truly a fascinating industry to be a part of; with the rapid advancements in technology combined with the ever changing scope of problems faced, there are always new challenges to be faced and this really excites me. Plasma Treating technology is the little known glue that holds the UK and Ireland’s manufacturing industries together and as Sales Director, I hope to continue to raise awareness of this fascinating and highly beneficial technology.
The Dyne Technology teams knowledge and industry leading Plasma Treating technology assists manufacturers and engineers across all industries when struggling to achieve the good adhesion levels of paints, coatings, sealants and glues to traditionally “non-stick” plastics.
Plasma Treating plastics, which is also referred to as Plasma Surface Activation, has proved itself as a highly effective, long lasting method of improving the adhesive qualities of “non-stick” plastics e.g. PP, PE, PEEK. The range of components that Plasma Treating is suitable for is undoubtedly huge, covering everything from
injection moulded, extruded or even part or fully assembled products that can have simple or complex three dimensional shapes. Not only will Plasma treat plastics but other materials like metals, ceramics, glass and even paper and wood.
Is Plasma Surface Activation used widely?
Used throughout a vast number of industries because of its flexibility of materials treated and more importantly, the consistent and reliable results provided. Our environmentally friendly process doesn’t alter the bulk properties of the treated part; Plasma Treating does not mark, discolour or damage the component in any way. After undergoing Plasma Surface Activation, the material will now have the required surface properties to ensure good wetting and adhesion of printing inks, paints, adhesives, coatings, etc.
How does Plasma Treating improve adhesion quality?
In simple terms, Plasma can be described as a super ionised gas. When atoms are subjected to high energy, the electrons around the nucleus begin to “boil off” and the increasing temperature results in the atoms being too hot to stay contained in orbit around the nucleus.
The free radicals and other particles that exist within the highly active plasma discharge can now attach to the material’s surface resulting in the formation of additional polar groups; this change results in the material now having a strong chemical attraction to paints, coatings, sealants, inks and adhesives. Not only that, but the ion bombardment allows the super cleaning of surfaces to remove organic contaminants.
